Standard Poodles are an exceptional breed in nearly every way — intelligence, athleticism, temperament, longevity. But they carry a meaningful predisposition to autoimmune disease that every prospective buyer and breeder should understand. There is no genetic test for Addison's disease. We cannot eliminate the risk. What we can do is use pedigree research, DNA diversity analysis, and thoughtful breeding decisions to work toward reducing its prevalence in our lines.

Autoimmune Disease in Standard Poodles — An Overview

In autoimmune disease, the immune system misfires — the body attacks its own tissues. Standard Poodles are genetically predisposed to several autoimmune conditions, likely due to shared genetic risk factors within the breed:

  • Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) — adrenal gland destruction; 8–10% prevalence in Standard Poodles
  • Autoimmune Thyroiditis (Hypothyroidism) — immune-mediated destruction of the thyroid gland; one of the most common endocrine diseases in the breed
  • Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) — immune attack on red blood cells
  • Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT) — immune attack on platelets, causing bleeding risk
  • Immune-Mediated Polyarthritis (IMPA) — immune-mediated joint inflammation
  • Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) — immune-mediated destruction of sebaceous glands
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) — chronic immune-mediated gastrointestinal inflammation

These conditions can occur independently or sequentially in the same dog — a pattern called Multiple Autoimmune Syndrome (MAS), which has been documented in Poodles. This reflects an underlying genetic susceptibility to immune dysregulation that runs in the breed.

Addison's Disease — A Deep Dive

What Is Addison's Disease?

Addison's disease (primary hypoadrenocorticism) occurs when the adrenal glands fail to produce adequate levels of two critical hormones: cortisol (regulates metabolism and the stress response) and aldosterone (regulates sodium and potassium balance). In Standard Poodles, the cause is almost always immune-mediated destruction of the adrenal cortex.

Without cortisol and aldosterone, the body cannot regulate basic physiological processes. Sodium is lost, potassium accumulates, blood pressure drops, and the dog cannot mount a normal response to stress. The consequences range from chronic, vague illness to sudden life-threatening collapse.

How Common Is It?

Addison's disease is rare in the general dog population — affecting roughly 0.1% of dogs overall. In Standard Poodles, the prevalence is estimated at 8–10%. That means as many as 1 in 10 Standard Poodles may develop the disease in their lifetime. It is one of the most well-documented breed-associated health conditions in veterinary medicine.

The disease affects females more than males and is typically diagnosed between 4 and 7 years of age, though it can occur at any age.

The Genetics — High Heritability, No Test (Yet)

Research has estimated the heritability of Addison's disease in Standard Poodles at approximately 0.75–0.76 — meaning roughly 75% of the variation in disease risk is attributable to genetics. This is an extremely high heritability estimate, comparable to traits like hip dysplasia. Breeding decisions matter.

Early research suggested an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. More recent whole-genome sequencing studies have suggested the genetics are more complex — likely involving multiple loci rather than a single causative mutation.

As of 2026, no validated commercial genetic test for Addison's disease in Standard Poodles exists. Researchers at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and Clemson University are actively working to identify genetic risk factors and develop a screening test.

Our Approach

The absence of a genetic test does not mean breeders are helpless. We take the following approach:

  1. Pedigree Research — we research health history of ancestors as far back as records allow. A pedigree with multiple affected relatives is a signal even without a genetic test.
  2. DNA Diversity Analysis — autoimmune disease risk is closely tied to MHC (Major Histocompatibility Complex) genetics. Through Better Bred pairing analysis, we select crosses that maximize MHC diversity — one of the most evidence-supported strategies available to breeders today.
  3. Honest Reporting — if a dog in our program is diagnosed with Addison's disease or any autoimmune condition, we disclose that and factor it into future breeding decisions.
  4. Transparency with Buyers — we tell every buyer about Addison's disease before they commit to a puppy.

What we cannot do: guarantee that any individual puppy will never develop Addison's disease. Any breeder who claims otherwise is not being honest.

Signs of Addison's Disease

Addison's disease is often called "The Great Pretender" because its signs are vague, wax and wane, and mimic dozens of other conditions. Many dogs are sick for months or years before a diagnosis is made.

Chronic Signs (may come and go)

  • Lethargy, weakness, or "just not right" episodes
  • Decreased appetite or weight loss
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea (often intermittent)
  • Increased water intake and urination
  • Shaking or shivering
  • Depression or behavioral changes
  • Muscle weakness

The Addisonian Crisis (Medical Emergency)

If your Standard Poodle collapses, shows sudden severe weakness, or has profuse vomiting/diarrhea with weakness: go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. An Addisonian crisis is fatal without treatment — and with prompt treatment, most dogs recover fully.

Signs of an Addisonian crisis:

  • Sudden, severe collapse — unable to stand
  • Severe vomiting and diarrhea (may be bloody)
  • Severe dehydration and hypothermia (low body temperature)
  • Bradycardia (slow heart rate) — from dangerously elevated potassium
  • Hypovolemic shock

Diagnosis

Any Standard Poodle with unexplained illness, electrolyte abnormalities, or episodic weakness should be tested.

  • Basic bloodwork: May show elevated potassium, low sodium, low blood glucose, elevated BUN/creatinine. A sodium:potassium ratio below 27 is a classic flag.
  • ACTH Stimulation Test: The definitive test. Cortisol is measured before and after synthetic ACTH administration. Dogs with Addison's fail to mount a cortisol response. This is the gold standard.
  • Abdominal ultrasound: May reveal small adrenal glands consistent with atrophy.

Treatment

The good news: Addison's disease is very manageable with treatment, and most dogs live a completely normal lifespan.

Mineralocorticoid Replacement

  • DOCP (Percorten-V): Injectable medication given every 25–28 days. Widely considered the most reliable and convenient option for most dogs.
  • Fludrocortisone (Florinef): Daily oral medication providing both mineralocorticoid and some glucocorticoid activity.

Glucocorticoid Replacement

Most dogs also require low-dose prednisone daily to replace cortisol. The dose is typically just physiologic replacement, and many dogs do well long-term.

Stress Dosing

Dogs with Addison's cannot mount a normal cortisol response to stress. During illness, surgery, injury, or significant stress, the glucocorticoid dose must be temporarily increased. Every owner of an Addisonian dog should have a stress dosing protocol from their veterinarian and carry emergency injectable dexamethasone.

Monitoring

Dogs on DOCP require periodic sodium and potassium monitoring to ensure electrolytes are within normal range. With proper management, most Addisonian dogs are stable, happy, and indistinguishable from healthy dogs.
